England have announced their 12-man squad for the second Ashes Test starting from August 14 at the Lord’s,. All-rounder Moeen Ali is extracted from the combination.

The Worcestershire player paid the price of not being able to showcase any significant performance in the first Test; he struggled both with bat and ball at Edgbaston, scoring just 0 and 4 and stood with a bowling figure of 3/172 from 42 overs across the match.

Slow left-arm spinner Jack Leach replaced Ali.

On the other hand, young pace sensation Jofra Archer is set to make his Test debut at Lord’s as he has made the place in the squad with both James Anderson and Olly Stone have been sidelined due to injury.

Earlier Archer was released from the first Ashes squad to prove his fitness; playing for Sussex last week, he claimed a six-fer conceding 27 runs before hammering an astounding 106.

The Barbados-born fast bowler would add some sheen in the English seam attack that is profoundly weakened by injuries of Mark Wood and James Anderson. The condition was further worsened this week when Olly Stone sustained an ankle injury that will keep him out of action for at least two weeks.

Ali’s replacement Jack Leach, who has experience of only five Tests under his belt, grabbed man of the match in the warm-up Test against Ireland last month when he scored 92.

English selectors found Leach as a sole replacement to Ali as Adil Rashid was also ruled out of cricket for the rest of the summer due to the chronic shoulder injury that he carried from the World Cup.

Left-arm seamer Sam Curran is able to retain his place in the squad with Joe Denly despite showing a poor run of form in the first Test of the series where England were defeated by 251 runs at Edgbaston.

England squad for second Ashes Test:

Joe Root (capt), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.
