Pakistan, staging their first one day international match at home soil in 10 years, beat visiting Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the second ODI of the series on Monday.

The win provides Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series with the first ODI washed out by incessant rain in Karachi on Friday.

A Babar Azam masterclass pushed the hosts to mount an imposing total after they decided to bat first. And later on, Pakistani bowlers led by Usman Shinwari crushed Sri Lanka far away from the target sealing the comfortable victory.

24-year old Azam, one of the best batsmen at present, hammered a brilliant 105-ball 115 to lift Pakistan to 305-7 in their fifty overs. The innings contained 8 shots to the boundary and four over-boundaries.

When on 54, Babar Azam became the fifth batsman to complete 1,000 ODI runs in 2019 just behind Indian skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Australia’s Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja.

Azam and Sohail added 111 runs in the third wicket partnership. Fakhar Zaman assisted well scoring 54 from 65 balls and Sohail contributed 40 as Sri Lankan bowlers toiled to break the stand.

In front of an approximate 12,000 crowd present to witness the return of cricket in Pakistan, Usman Shinwari returned with an astounding figure of 5 for 51.

Sri Lanka’s top order was knocked down just within first 11 overs of their innings when they stood at only 28 runs on the board losing 5 wickets.

The visiting side, however, fought hard afterwards; stood for a record sixth wicket stand of 177 runs between Shehan Jayasuriya and Dasun Shanaka.

All that partnership could do was to shorten the margin of defeat chasing the big total. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 238 runs inside 47th over.

The third and final match is also set for the same venue on Wednesday.
