The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) handed a five-year ban, of which two were suspended, and a massive fine of three lakh Taka ($3,540) to former Test cricketer Shahadat Hossain for assaulting teammate Arafat Sunny.

The incident took place during the ongoing National Cricket League match between the Dhaka Division and Khulna Division at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna on Sunday.

The officials in charge of the contest reported Shahadat’s informal on-pitch behaviour after the pacer was seen slapping and kicking his teammate during the match.

The match referee analysed the situation and decided to pass on the verdict to the technical committee. Therefore BCB technical committee suspended the player while also handing a hefty fine.

An official of BCB tournament informed media that Shahadat accepted the offence which was a Level 4 offence and returned back from Khulna.

“Under the level four offences a player will be banned from participating in any BCB competition for one year while he will be slapped with a fine of Tk 50,000,”

said BCB official.

“Shahadat accepted the verdict and returned back home. We have given the report of the match referee to the technical committee and they will decide his future but he has been barred of taking part in this NCL game,” he added.

“Considering his past behaviour we decided to punish him for five years. The last two years of his ban will remain suspended,” BCB’s technical committee chief Minhajul Abedin was quoted as saying by AFP.

The horrid incident started when Arafat Sunny pointed out to Shahadat that he (later) could not shine the ball properly; heated argument started on the ground between these two following which Shahadat was found physically abusing his teammate.

It can be noted this is not the first time Shahadat Hossain face suspension on disciplinary grounds. In 2015, he was arrested, while being in the national team, after beating his domestic worker at home. Later he was temporarily suspended.

Since then, Shahadat Hossain is out of Bangladesh national team. Lately in 2018, reports emerged about Hossain assaulting a rickshaw driver for bumping into his vehicle in Dhaka.

33-year-old Shahadat played 38 Tests, 51 ODIs and 6 T20Is for Bangladesh.
