Former New Zealand hard hitter Brendon McCullum has been appointed as the head coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.

The KKR statement as released on Thursday, stated, “McCullum has been very closely associated with the Knight Riders franchise as a player first from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2012-2013 & was part of the IPL championship squad in 2012. He was also part of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) squad in the CPL, from 2016-2018, during which TKR won back-to-back championships in 2017 & 2018.”

McCullum, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, had previously been reported to take the role of KKR assistant coach.

On having his new role, the former Kiwi star revealed his excitement saying it’s a great honor for him.

“It’s a great honor to take on this responsibility. The Knight Rider franchises in IPL and CPL have become iconic and have set the standards in franchise cricket.

“We have fantastic squad in both KKR and TKR and I along with the support staff will be looking to build on the successes both franchises have enjoyed,” McCullum said.

McCullum’s association with Kolkata Knight Riders has a long story. He started his IPL journey for KKR in the inauguration league back in 2008 with a thundering century.

His stint with KKR started again in 2012 when he was part of the title winning team.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore said about having McCullum as the coach that he was the most ideally suited candidate for the position, “Brendon has been an integral part of the Knight Riders family for a long time. His leadership qualities, honesty, positive & aggressive style, combined with his natural ability to bring the best out of the teams he has been part of makes him ideally suited to lead KKR & TKR as a Head Coach.”
