India’s stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma, on Sunday snatched the top spot in the list of leading run-scorers in T20 internationals during the first T20I against Bangladesh.

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Rohit has surpassed regular skipper Virat Kohli who was in the peak with 2,450 runs to his name.  The current captain was just eight runs behind the former before beginning the match.

Rohit so far has amassed 2443 runs in 98 matches at an average of 32.14 with four hundreds and 17 fifties while Kohli has 2450 runs in 72 games at an average of 50 with 22 half-centuries.

In another record, Rohit overtook Dhoni by playing his 99th T20I for India thus sitting beside former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi who also played 99 T2oIs. Only Shoaib Malik (111) has played more matches than Rohit now.

“It’s been a long journey since 2007 when I made my debut in the T20 World Cup. It’s been a long journey which has had a lot of ups and downs as well. There’s been so many things that I have learnt in the last 12 years I have played this format. Today, I sit here with heads on my shoulder,” Rohit Sharma said.

Rohit could also become the first Indian to capture 400 sixes in international cricket. Currently, his tally stands at 392.

“When you come into the team as a young player, you’re only trying to learn things. It happened quite smoothly at the start. But then with few ups and few downs, I have become a stronger player. I have understood my game really well.

“It’s been a fruitful journey so far. There are a lot of crucial knocks that I played over 12 years,” he added.
