All-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been dropped and with both Steve Smith and David Warner have been taken, Australia announced their 14-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan on Tuesday.

Top order batsman Ben McDermott and fast bowler Billy Stanlake have also earned a call-up in the side.

Besides enduring a poor run with the bat in Australia’s semi-final exit from the World Cup 2019 where he managed only 87 runs in 7 innings, Stoinis have been struggling with multiple injuries.

Australia’s selector Trevor Hohns stated about the selection, “It is almost a year to the day until Australia hosts the men’s Twenty20 World Cup and we have selected this squad with that in mind.

“We have looked to put a squad together that we think can take us through to that tournament. The squad we have selected is quite role specific and we believe it gives us the flexibility to thrive in all match conditions.”

The biggest boost that Australia received is the return of David Warner and Steve Smith in the side. Warner though passed quite a destitute Ashes series, Smith produced stand-out performance in Australia retaining the urn.

Trevor Hohns expressed his delight having the duo back in the scene in the shortest version as well. He said,

“We are delighted to welcome Steve Smith and David Warner back into the Twenty20 International fold. Steve is a world-class batsman in all formats, while Warner is Australia’s highest ever T20I runs-scorer.

“He was also the leading runs-scorer at this year’s Indian Premier League with Sunrisers Hyderabad,” Hohns said.

The series against Sri Lanka will begin from October 27 whereas the Pakistan series will begin from November 3.
