Indian skipper Virat Kohli has added another milestone in his career; he has become the fastest captain to reach 11,000 international runs during the third T20I match against Sri Lanka in Pune.

Thus Kohli became the second Indian skipper to complete 11,000 international runs after his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In overall campaign, Kohli was the sixth skipper to achieve the feature.

Kohli broke former Australia cricketer Ricky Ponting’s record as it was his 169th international match as the captain.

Before starting the match, Kohli needed only a single run that he crossed during the 13th over of the Indian innings against a delivery of Lakshan Sandakan.

Fastest to reach 11000 international runs as captain

Virat Kohli – 196 innings

Ricky Ponting – 252 innings

Graeme Smith – 264 innings

Allan Border – 316 innings

MS Dhoni – 324 innings

Stephen Fleming – 333 innings

Former Australia captain Ponting leads the list with 15,440 runs in 324 matches followed by Graeme Smith (14,878 in 286 matches), Stephen Fleming (11,561 in 303 matches), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (11,207 in 332 matches) and Allan Border (11,062 in 271 matches).

The 31-year old also the fastest batsman to reach 11,000 runs in ODI cricket during the World Cup 2019 match against Pakistan in Manchester last year.

He has so far amassed 7202 runs from 84 Tests and 11609 runs from 242 ODIs. Earlier he became the fastest to score 1000 T20I runs as captain in the last game against Sri Lanka in Indore which was his 30th innings as skipper.

Kohli also crossed past his teammate Rohit Sharma to ride in the top spot on the list of most runs scored in T20I cricket during his unbeaten 30 off 17 balls in the second match. India won the match by 7 wickets to take an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The first match of the series was washed out by rain without a ball being bowled.

In the third match, Shradul Thakur was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ while Navdeep Saini, who took five wickets in two matches, was judged as the ‘Player of the Series’.
